HVAC stands for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning. It refers to the process of providing the proper temperature and quality air in enclosed spaces.
H – Heating
V – Ventilation
AC – Air Conditioning
In homes, we use air conditioners (AC) during summer and heaters during winter—especially in colder regions like Europe—to maintain the desired indoor temperature.
In industries such as the food and pharmaceutical sectors, maintaining specific temperatures is critical. For example, food and medicines are stored at very low temperatures to preserve their quality. In HVAC, providing the necessary temperature for a specific environment—whether hot or cold—is what we refer to as heating.
In homes, windows and other openings allow fresh air to enter and stale air to exit, providing natural ventilation. However, in office buildings, most spaces are fully enclosed, which limits airflow.
What happens if there's no proper ventilation?
Employees in a closed office breathe in oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide (CO₂). Without adequate ventilation, CO₂ accumulates in the room. This air is circulated back to the Air Handling Unit (AHU) through return ducts, where it’s filtered and then sent back into the room.
Over time, the level of carbon dioxide increases, and the oxygen level decreases. This can lead to discomfort for the employees, such as headaches, dizziness, and reduced productivity.
To solve this, a fresh air duct is connected to the return duct of the AHU, allowing outside air to mix in. This helps maintain the proper balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the room.
Air that enters a space may contain dust and moisture. To improve air quality, this air passes through filters to remove dust particles and a moisture eliminator to reduce humidity.
The result is clean, conditioned air delivered into the room. This is what we call air conditioning—ensuring both temperature control and air quality.
