How a Chiller, Cooling Tower, and Air Handling Unit Work Together

1. Chiller – The Cooling Generator

The chiller is the heart of the system. It uses a refrigeration cycle to remove heat from water, producing chilled water that is sent through the building to provide cooling.

  • Function: Produces chilled water (usually between 6–12°C).

  • Location: Typically inside a plant room or mechanical area.

 2. AHU – The Air Distributor

The AHU receives the chilled water from the chiller. Inside the AHU, air is blown over coils containing this chilled water, cooling the air before it's distributed through the building’s ductwork.

  • Function: Conditions and circulates cool air throughout indoor spaces.

  • Components: Includes filters, fans, and cooling coils.

 3. Cooling Tower – The Heat Releaser

When the chiller removes heat from the water, that heat needs to go somewhere. That’s where the cooling tower comes in. It takes the excess heat from the condenser side of the chiller and releases it into the atmosphere through the process of evaporation.

  • Function: Expels unwanted heat from the building into the air.

  • Location: Typically mounted outdoors on rooftops or beside the building.

 Putting It All Together

Here’s how they work in a continuous cycle:

  1. The chiller cools water and sends it to the AHUs.

  2. The AHU uses this chilled water to cool the air, which is then circulated indoors.

  3. The chiller simultaneously extracts heat from the water it just cooled.

  4. This extracted heat is transferred to another water loop and sent to the cooling tower.

  5. The cooling tower dissipates this heat into the air, completing the cycle.
